Cronus Getting Punched In the Nose

Whoops, forgot to post this.



This was a bit of a meme inside joke on tumblr for a while. A user I follow, rosesollux, decided to start a tag called "cronus getting punched in the nose"(Cronus being an insufferable Homestuck character) and a few sketches got made. I decided to do one because punches are dynamic and I like to sketch during lectures.

Wow it's been a while since I posted. In the meantime I completed my second year of university, went home for the summer, read the entirety of Homestuck, and saw my favourite band in concert, to name but a few.

Linetest: Ness

Behold, animation! I sketched this out today for a bit of practice and experimentation. Since my third year film is going to have a lot of dialogue, I'm going to need to know how to lip sync. I don't have any audio yet so this is just a basic test, mostly to see if my character is easily animatable. I think for the most part the answer is yes.



This is intended to be in-betweened, but animating in Photoshop doesn't have the same feel as with paper and a light box so it does get a bit frustrating.

As Nessa has no eyebrows, I have to rely mainly on the shape of her eyes to convey emotion. Her ears and mouth are also key points, and I've found recently in my personal art that the tilt of the head can really help as well. Though the line down the middle of her head/snout isn't really in her design, I do want to find a way to incorporate it, as it makes things much easier to read. I'm pretty happy with how I've been able to capture her personality in this animation, something I would not have been able to do without all the sketches I've done beforehand. 

Anyway, I think I'll leave this one for now and move on to the other main character, Astar. I should also do some full-body animation as well. Walking! Jumping! Flying! Actually, those are all boring technical things. It's much more interesting to animate movement directed towards conveying a feeling.

Character Variety Meme

I've been on a meme binge since finding this post on tumblr. It's got all sorts of useful memes for character development, so I thought I'd try out a few.

I'm pasting my deviantArt notes in full below. Be warned; they're something of a tl;dr.






































































































































































































































Originally I was going to use this for the two main characters of my third year film pitch, but they are intentionally designed to contrast each other and so it would kind of be missing the point. I thought about it for a while and realized that Ciaran and Levi are actually quite similar. It's been ages since I've drawn Ciaran or even worked on Tales of Kenah, and I've learned tons since then, so I actually figured him out a bit as I went. Levi is designed with much more thought in the details.

Overall, disembodied parts of characters are actually really difficult to draw! For Levi's hand I actually had to sketch out a body to put a hand on, then get rid of it. I did the same with faces for the mouths. The more I worked on this, the more I realized just how important line quality is. It's something I've been improving lately without really noticing, but it means a lot when you're not using tones!

Commentary by section:
Hands and feet: Levi is generally characterized as slender and androgynous (or downright feminine, depending). He's the type of person who's really freaking skinny, so his bones would be quite prominent wherever. Ci's stockier, more muscular, and more inclined to spread his toes for balance. The things you think about when you're told to do these things!
Noses: Along with mouths, noses are facial feature I vary the least. Mostly because I have a rather limited opinion of what an attractive nose is, but at the same time it's not something I put much stock in. I do tend to have a general idea - Levi's nose is small, kind of flat due to his part-Asian heritage and the feminine look I'm pushing for him. Ciaran's nose is... average. Bah, nothing interesting in that.
Mouths with teeth showing: I purposely chose two similar characters, and neither Levi and Ciaran are really the type to smile with their mouths open unless they're laughing or talking. Regardless this was very interesting. I find mouths doubly hard to draw when open, and I have never considered varying teeth, partly because if I were to detail every tooth it would look out of place in my style. But I don't want to use "style" as a crutch or excuse. Levi's teeth are pretty standard, and he has thin lips. Ciaran, being a Wevlin, has longer canines, though one's chipped, and he's missing a molar. Life's tough in the wild.
Dialogue: I wanted to come up with something that wouldn't give it away through setting or plot, and thought the best way would be to imagine them both in a similar situation. So in this one they're voicing their attempts to console someone who's upset. For Levi I straight-up took a line from The Phoenix, then I considered the same situation for Ciaran. Funnily enough, Ciaran is even more socially awkward than Levi...
Colours: Basically I took skin, hair, and eyes. Ciaran has fur, so I added that too. Nothing too special here. Of course they're both pale and dark-haired and have bright eyes... I mean, I know these two both have a special place in my heart, but I didn't realize how similarly they were designed until I did this. I can't decide whether it's a bad or good thing. There are plenty of other characters in my arsenal who are completely different.
Eyes: As previously mentioned, Levi's part Asian, and it shows the most in his eyes. Ciaran tends to have this part-lidded thing going on most of the time. Interestingly enough, even though I found these the easiest to draw on their own, I actually found it harder to get them accurate in terms of design. Eyes and eyebrows are the features I differ the most when designing characters, so I'm on a different level with them than I am with other features, and I could push myself to be more accurate in drawing them.
Clothes: Didn't really know what to do here, so Levi's signature waistcoat and Ciaran's overshirt. I realized during this that Kenah probably doesn't have the technology to make the kinds of clothes Ciaran's wearing, and anyway it'd be stupid and impractical. I'm probably going to redesign his clothes if I ever get back to work on ToK.
Stick figures: This was actually quite fun. I allowed myself a shape for the torso because they're built differently, but they also stand differently. I think I didn't draw Ciaran's torso wide enough; as I said before, he's stocky. Because he lives in a setting that emphasizes survival and fighting, he takes a wider stance, but he has a tendency to slouch. Levi, who lives comfortably in the first world, leads a much more casual lifestyle.
Bodies: Wasn't really sure how to do a "different angle" so I picked a profile... which then made it hard for me to add arms. Bad move. Again, Levi's friggin' skinny and tall, and Ciaran's actually fairly short. Probably didn't emphasize that enough in the whole meme, and he should be more muscular considering what he has to do. Things to work on!
Heads without hair etc.: This was in fact quite difficult, but in the end it's just a reiteration of facial features, plus jaw and face shape. I guess skull shape is worth considering, though not that important. Ciaran's head/jaw/face shape is something I'm still not 100% on, since I came up with it as I was doing this meme and I'm not yet sure quite what I want from him.
Hair on mannequins: The only reason Ciaran doesn't have the same parting as Levi is because I specifically decided he shouldn't. There are enough similarities as it is. Ciaran's hair is actually really boring... and girly out of context.
Silhouettes: I LOVE silhouettes. I find legs much easier and more interesting to draw in silhouette than in line for some reason. This is the only place I showed Ciaran's wings and tail, because I figured they'd give it away earlier. Levi needs to eat some food.

I would tag people but I don't know who even follows me anymore. If you have enough characters, pick the two most similar ones you can think of and put them through this! It's great development and practice drawing different things.

Dragon Designs

I ended up having a lot more fun with these than I'd expected! Some are obviously more draconic than others, but I think it's okay to expand the description to "creatures" instead of just "dragons" now. I ditched a couple of silhouettes entirely, and for some others I just drew their heads because I liked them but not the rest of the body so much. Surprisingly, the one that seemed to have the most character originally (the worried-looking middle one with the spindly neck) seems to have become the most generic of them now. Maybe because I drew him first.


These were fun and refreshing to do, and they've been useful in rethinking my idea of what a dragon can look like. I don't know how likely they are to show up in my final film pitch but I'll definitely be submitting them as part of my process work.

Dragon Silhouettes

In an effort to break out of my narrow-minded box and get some interesting body shapes in my dragons, I took a look at art from How to Train Your Dragon and decided to try something more cartoony. Some of these work better than others, but it's always good to get the ones that don't work out of your system anyway. I'll be taking my favourites and refining the designs and seeing if that helps give them more personality, since these were meant to help character design.

Thumbnail-a-Day

I don't handle New Year's resolutions too well. I always end up forgetting and then just feeling guilty. Just because it's a new year or a new month or a new week doesn't mean I'll take a resolution any more seriously. So my goal is to draw one comic page thumbnail per day for 30 days.

Why comics? So many times I've suddenly thought, "I want to do a comic!" But I never, EVER have the motivation. There's so much to do - I have to iron out the story before all else, because none of my original stories have enough substance to them to sustain a comic right now. I have to design characters, figure out setting and floor plans, manage dialogue... not to mention that every panel of a comic is a piece of art in and of itself.

More than anything else, though, what stops me is page layout and composition. There's something about the sheer possibilities of the boxes and triangles and other shapes you can arrange on a page that just has me freezing up like a deer in headlights. Not that this is the only thing that makes me put down my pencil before I've even made a mark, but I get really caught up wondering to myself, what if it's no good? What if my product isn't creative enough? What if someone notices how awful my layouts are?

What I have to realize is that as long as a comic layout flows readably, it works. If the panel size and arrangement aid pacing, even better. If you can come up with a cool composition for the images within the panels that complements it, bonus! They're little things that add up. And I have to realize that I'm not always going to get it right the first time. I've freed myself up a little, working on this challenge. I start planning a layout the way I'm thinking of it. A lot of the time, though, I only have a section of it clearly in my head, and the rest is vague. But that's okay. When I run out of pre-planned stuff, I start making it up. If it's wrong, I just redo it. As long as I complete a page in a day, it doesn't matter whether it works or whether I'll ever use it. It doesn't matter what story it's for; most of my writing plays out in my head cinematically so it's easy to pick a scene no matter what medium I ultimately want to use. What matters is that I'm practicing.

...That said, the pattern lately seems to be that each day I'm just doing the previous day's work. Even when I do catch up, I then miss the next day. Evidently I'm just awful at this. But I will not skip a day! Here's my progress.

For the first one, since I didn't really have the feel of it yet, I started by sketching out the panels without worrying about layout. Then, when I had what I wanted, I arranged them into a page.
After that I quickly got the hang of just sketching in the panels, though I did retry it once or twice. If I'd already sketched it, I would number the panels and just do a page layout with the panel numbers in, not bothering to resketch. I already have the visuals there, after all, in case I do decide to turn it into a comic. Every now and then I did sketch a panel before inserting it, because I find boxes very stifling.  
I've started putting the date on them so I can tell when I've missed a day. Maybe one day I'll be inspired enough to do more than one, and then I'll be ahead instead of behind!
